Just discovered The Hessian Studies Society that purports to study Metal (they call it 'Hessian') culture. Presumably it's a bizarre piss-take but it does feature a decent intro to Metal on its webpage.

The time has come for fans of heavy metal music and culture, called colloquially "Hessians," to assert their own position in this hierarchy and have a political and social defense of their way of life.
Heavy metal music has remained proudly independent of popular music styles and has become increasingly complex, brave in its topics and imagery, and defiant in its assertion of its own values system. The Hessian Studies Society aims to study Hessian culture, promote it and defend it in the battleground of ideas that is modern society.

The article draws attention to the disparity between the extremity of the music and the normaility of the fans' lives - a point I also make in my book. Unlike a lot of articles in the mainstream press, this one is appreciative of the artistry of the music, rather than simply scornful.
Not sure how I missed this before: Golgolot is a one man Black Metal project from Israel - ultra-lo-fi and almost unlistenable. He's ultra-orthodox and has v unpleasant Kahanist views about Jews and Christians.

It's all most odd. A scam? Possibly. The website is pretty amateurish. The idea, as far as I can make it out is to flog underwear to the British Jewish community. But where do Israeli Metal bands come in???

Apparently Igor Cavalera has left Sepultura. Not only a great drummer in a great band, but an honorary Metal Jew. He's married to an Israel and apparently coverted to Judaism.

UPDATE 7/6/6: Fuck I got it wrong! Thanks to Jonny who pointed out that 668 is the neighbour of the beast whilst 667 is the guy who lives opposite. I knew this of course - I've told the joke dozens of times. Clearly the 666 gremlins were at work...

Aleister Crowley's reputation as an outsider, poet and magician is infamous. Tonight Zorn invokes the spirit of Crowley in two startling and very different world premieres for voice and ensemble.
Evocation of a Neophyte and How the Black Arts were Revealed unto Her by the Demon Baphomet brings the mystery of Enochian Ritual into the Barbican through a beautiful new work for soprano soloist, mixed choir, harp, contrabassoon and percussion, performed by musicians from the London Sinfonietta, conducted by Brad Lubman.
Moonchild, Zorn's most recent work, is a hardcore song cycle scored for voice, bass and drums. Featuring vocalist Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomaf) singing in preverbal language accompanied by two longtime Zorn alumni, Trevor Dunn and Joey Baron, and conducted by Zorn himself, this is an intense new compositional direction for Zorn, and takes rock to some startling new places.
Also featured in the evening is a new film of Crowley paintings and drawings by the legendary Kenneth Anger.
